“Mother Strike,” this year’s Grande of Film Lotus created by Choojai and Friends, Bangkok, and Suneta House, Bangkok for Snack Jack Ring by Hanami Food, is a comedic masterpiece on the generational gap between a mother and her Gen Z son. They may be sitting at the same table, but they feel worlds apart. Before she can guide him, she must first enter his. Mother Strike is part of a film series inviting parents to enter their children’s world to connect with them in the digital age.
THE DISTANCE
The film opens with the mother at one end of an impossibly long table and Oat at the other, absorbed in a game on his phone. She calls his name, but he does not respond. Frustrated, she tells him to close the game. The more she pushes, the longer the table gets, increasing distance between them. In her desperation to reach out to her son, he enters his world.
Still dressed in her pyjamas, her handbag clutched by her side, she is transported into a smoke-filled battle royale. Unaware of how the game works, she obliviously walks through the battlefield calling for her son, only to be shot and bombed within seconds. A group of young gamers revived her. Again, and again, and again.
Her persistence earned the respect of the young gamers, who became her teachers. To understand this world, she must think like them as they showed her how to throw grenades, dodge bullets, and return fire. Armed with a brightly coloured toy gun, she learns to fight and survive in this world The table, once impossibly long, becomes shorter. She realises what her son was doing was not simple game play, but it required strategy and persistence
After fighting her way through the battlefield, she kicks down a door and finally finds Oat. She does not shout or tell him that gaming is a waste of time. Instead, she says she now understands that getting this far is not easy to have gotten this far and that he is good at it. But she further explains that being even better means knowing how to divide his time. That he must also do his homework. Oat finally listens.
They finally speak the same language.
The exaggerated and surreal film ties in beautifully to the product as they share Snack Jack Ring. The distance created by the long table has closed, and the ring-shaped snack completes the idea through the final line: “If you understand each other, you can be in the same circle.”
“Mother Strike” is ultimately a film about the way we connect across generations. It turns conflict into an invitation to understand; a mother is no longer fighting her son, she is trying to understand him. And with understanding, comes mutual respect.
