ADFEST caught up with Jovert, Mark and Jimmo at DDB Philippines and asked them to explain the inspiration behind their winning Lotus trophy design, called ‘In Full Bloom’. Here’s what they said…
Can you tell us about your inspiration for the new Lotus trophy? Mark: We thought the lotus flower was an obvious choice for the design inspiration. But we feared that a lot of entries would be based on it. This was the challenge for our team: how to derive inspiration from the lotus flower and make sure it was going to be different from the other entries.
Jimmo: Our strategy was to make it go beyond design by giving it a story.
And that story came to life with “In Full Bloom”.
Jovert: The lotus flower begins life as a humble seed but blossoms into something very special.. It represents tenacity and resilience. The story of the lotus flower is the story of a creative person and every idea he creates. Everything starts out rough but ends beautifully.
Each idea is like a single petal.
It represents success – a job well done, a piece of work well made. It’s something that’s already beautiful on its own, but looks even better when put together with the others.
It speaks well of our motivation to keep on creating beautiful work, collect more petals, collect more Lotus Trophies, so you can form your own beautiful Lotus Trophy Flower.
The trophies are designed to be collected. How do they fit together? Jovert: Since the Lotus Trophy is shaped like the lotus flower’s petal, it should be arranged in layers of circles to mimic the lotus flower’s form. The more Lotus Trophies you have, the more it will look like a lotus flower.
Why did you decide to enter ADFEST's trophy design competition? Jimmo: We thought it was a good opportunity to flex our design muscles. The thought of winning the competition was enough motivation.
Mark: Redesigning ADFEST’s iconic trophy is a formidable task because the trophy will represent ADFEST for a long time. The honor that goes with winning it was inspiration enough.
Were there any challenges in bringing your original design to life as a real prototype? Jovert: Multiple batches of prototypes were made in order to meet the design specifications. Fitting the metal sheet on the trophy turned out to be the trickiest part because of the curved front surface of the trophy. Kudos to the guys producing the Lotus Trophy for being patient in following our vision and accepting the challenge of making the trophy look the way we designed it.
You also designed the ADFEST Lotus certificate and promo video. Can you tell us a little about the video concept? Mark: The launch video is about the lotus flower’s transformation just like a creative idea coming to fruition: from a bud to a flower in full bloom that showcases its true beauty.
Your new trophy will be a big part of the festival's 20-year celebrations. What is the significance of ADFEST to you? Mark: To be able to contribute to ADFEST means a lot especially as the new trophy is a significant feature to the 20th year of ADFEST. It humbles us, and the experience of designing the ADFEST Trophy will serve as a reminder that all the hard work will pay off once you put your heart into it.
