SPEAKERS : ADFEST SPEAKERS SESSIONS: INTEL VR INNOVATION, WORKING FOR A BETTER WORLD
Paul Lu is the brand, creative, events and Olympic marketing director for Intel China and his session Technology Innovation and Brand Building’ highlighted some exciting projects Intel has been doing recently.

The first project focused on Kexin Fan, a Chinese short-track speed skater champion. Her story was truly endearing, as Intel has helped her to communicate with their grandmother.

“We really hope our technology can help people connect athletes to their families,” Lu commented.

Intel’s True VR technology allowed her grandmother to see her granddaughter, Kexin, skate from Kexin’s point of view and take part in her journey. The story depicted the great hardships her family endured to give Kexin a chance to fulfill her dream, so sharing the experience through VR really meant a lot to the entire family.

Intel has also been dabbling with AI technology. One project explained the dying art of Shadow Play in China, which is a type of puppetry which tells a story using shadow silhouettes.

Lu explained, “There are only 50 artists left that know this technique and 15 of them are over 70 years old.”

In response to this, Intel was able to teach the art of shadow play to a three-fingered AI robot. The final presentation showed one of the few remaining artists demonstrating a play with a man and a tiger, where the tiger was exclusively handled by the robot. They worked in unison to give a performance that entertained and awed.

In addition to preserving the arts, Intel has also invested in preserving Chinese history, and notably the Great Wall. Intel has worked closely with the Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation (CFCHD) which is fighting the natural damage and erosion that weather causes in the wall. Intel has armed this group with drones, which help identify and repair stretches of the wall that are too dangerous or costly for traditional preservation methods. One member of CFCHD mentioned, “what would normally take one month, we can now do in three days.”
